Constructed in the late 1600s, this church has suffered damage from many earthquakes, common in Antigua Guatemala, over more than 300 years.
The town center Plaza at Antigua includes numerous buildings dating to pre-columbian times. The ancient culture of the Maya is also clearly present throughout Guatemala and Mesoamerica. The women, many with young children, can be seen selling textiles fabricated by hand in the classic Mayan fashion. They will spend a few days in town earning what they can, sleeping around or near the plaza and returning to secluded humble dwellings tucked away in the surrounding jungle.
